Separation & Divorce

Maryland Divorce Lawyer

“My philosophy is simple: I am sworn to zealously represent my clients. This does not mean that I start wars or run up bills. For me it means to do the best job that I can to solve my clients’ problems.” – Attorney Dwight Clark

Three Expenses to Think About When You are Considering Divorce

When you are thinking about the possibility of ending your marriage there are three expenses you must consider:

  • Money – How much will it cost me to get a divorce? How expensive is a custody battle in court? What about after divorce – how much will I have to pay in alimony or child support?
  • Time – How much time will the process take? What if my spouse contests the divorce? How much time will I get to spend with my children? How often will I have to communicate with my ex?
  • Emotions – How will this move affect me personally? How will it affect my children? What will it be like to live alone and only see my children on weekends?

At the Law Offices of Dwight W. Clark our job is to reduce these three expenses to the minimum amount possible.

Separation or Divorce?

If you and your spouse can reach an agreement as to your property and other assets, and as to child custody and how to jointly make important decisions about health, education and religion, you may wish to consider entering into a Voluntary Separation and Property Settlement Agreement. If after a year, you and your spouse decide you still wish to divorce, your separation agreement can serve as an exhibit to the courts. Because you have already laid the groundwork you can obtain an uncontested divorce at a great savings to all parties involved.

Of course, you can file for a contested divorce on the grounds of abandonment, adultery, criminal behavior, abuse, etc., but this can be expensive … in all three areas mentioned above.

We are happy to discuss this possibility as well as other matters including alimony (spousal support), division of marital property and stepparent adoption.
