Selling bad memories after a divorce

On Behalf of | Jul 3, 2013 | Divorce |

So you’ve managed to survive the initial divorce proceedings and are working your way to dividing your assets when you hit a snag. What do you do with all of those belongings that hold painful sentiments? Someone has to take them, but does that mean you have to keep them?

We’re specifically referring to those relationship specific items such as jewelry or even your wedding dress that you know holds value but also might hold some painful memories as well. So what do you do with them after the divorce? While most people in Maryland might suggest taking them to a pawn shop, in some circumstances, such as with a wedding dress, the shop may not take it. You could always donate it, others would suggest, but somehow a tax-deductable donation doesn’t seem enough compensation for all of the hard work you went through to get the dress.

A similar predicament faced one Florida woman who also wondered what she was going to do with her newfound life. She had been a stay-at-home mom for so long, and after her divorce, she found herself with a plethora of items that only reminded her of her ex and trouble finding a job. So she set out to make a job she wanted and created Dreams Recycled, a website that allows users to sell things from their failed relationships and connect with people in similar situations. The site also offers users a chance to talk to other divorcees and share experiences.

While most people find it hard to let go of sentimental items, for divorcees this sometimes is far from the truth. Sites such as Dreams Recycled gives people a chance to sell these painful sentiments in what could be considered a very therapeutic way.
