Why young people put off estate planning

On Behalf of | May 19, 2022 | Estate Planning |

Estate planning carries some negative connotations, but these are largely based on misconceptions. Yes, the process involves talking about and planning for the event of death, but there is so much more to it.

Young adults are especially notorious for disregarding the subject. Why is this the case?

Young adults can be career-focused

It takes a long time to establish yourself in the corporate world, and this is often the priority of young adults. Occasionally, young people put their careers before starting a family and other endeavors. The work never ends and there rarely seems to be a moment where estate planning could be addressed.

Young people are generally healthy

As you get older, health issues can pile up. This is typically a problem that younger people don’t have. If this is the case, it’s easy to view estate planning as something that only applies to older people or those who have fallen ill. The truth is that illnesses and accidents tend not to discriminate. They can impact young people just as much as the older generation.

People think the topic is depressing

Estate planning is often viewed as a morbid topic. It’s not something that younger people generally want to bring up around friends or family. In reality, estate planning doesn’t mean that you have to obsess over death. It only takes a short amount of time, relatively speaking, to get your plans in place and secure a valuable peace of mind.

Even if you have yet to start a family or acquire vast amounts of property, estate planning can still bring a host of benefits to your life. To find out more about these benefits, be sure to reach out to someone with knowledge in the field.
