Do these things before contacting a divorce lawyer

On Behalf of | Jul 3, 2020 | Divorce |

If divorce is on your mind, you understand that the decision to go down this path is a big one. It will change your life in many ways, from your finances to the relationship with your children.

Even though you may be unsure about taking action, don’t let fear derail your plans. If you know that divorce is the only way to a better life, it’s time to discuss your feelings with your spouse and plan for the future.

There will come a time when you contact a divorce lawyer for assistance, but before then here are some of the things you should do:

  • Ask your spouse for a divorce: This could go either way. Maybe your spouse feels the same way as you and agrees that divorce is the answer. Or maybe they’re caught off-guard, wondering why you want a divorce and hoping to change your mind. Either way, make sure you share your true feelings and intentions.
  • Collect the necessary documents: This can include but is not limited to pay stubs, bank account statements, retirement account statements and tax returns. If you think it will come into play during your divorce, put it aside. Your lawyer will eventually tell you what you do and don’t need.
  • Assess your future: Personally, you know that divorce is going to improve your future. You realize that your marriage is bad for you in many ways. As you prepare for divorce, you must consider the ways that divorce will impact it. Where will you live? How will you best care for your children? What does your post-divorce budget look like? Do you plan on dating again or remaining single? You never know what the future will bring, but you should still assess it early in the divorce process.

While it’s important to do all three of these things, you may find yourself focused on other details, too.

Once you have a clear idea of where you stand and what you want to accomplish, you can then contact a divorce lawyer to learn more about the process, the steps you should take and how to protect your legal rights from beginning to end.
